Research was conducted in support of updating the U.S. military handling qualities specification, MIL-H-8501A. The effects of torque response and time delay on rotorcraft vertical axis handling qualities were investigated with the use of a CH-478 variable stability helicopter and a fixed base simulator. The frequency response of displayed torque dynamics was found to be an important factor in vertical axis handling qualities. This finding has caused a revision to the update of the MIL-H-8501A.
