In this paper, a diagnostic method for sensors in electronically controlled internal combustion engines is presented. The proposed method incorporates a pair of state estimators, utilizing a dynamic reference model for the given internal combustion engine. It is shown that the method is computationally efficient, and hence is suited for on-board applications as well as for repair-shop apparatus. Furthermore, the method can estimate the amount of reading error in failed sensors. Therefore, partial failures can be identified and subsequently warn vehicle operators. Since the current method does not require expensive hardware duplication, it can be implemented in a large class of passenger vehicles. Other applications include, but are not limited to, real-time limp-home operation of a vehicle under partial failures, and sensor calibration during vehicle assembly.
