Aerospace gas turbine control designers have long recognized the suitability of modern control theory to deal with the severe problem of controlling multiple turbine outputs by generating multiple inputs. Marine gas turbines are equally complex and thus suggest a similar approach. Many modern methods require a state-space approach to turbine and load modelling, this paper outlines a procedure used to generate such a state-space model for a marine gas turbine plant. Simulation results for linear and non-linear plant models are compared and a modern controller development to achieve reduced fuel consumption is briefly discussed.
