Procedures used to assess carburetted engine intake manifold performance using an eddy current absorption dynamometer rig are described. Mixture distribution under unheated manifold conditions, together with wide open throttle volumetric efficiency, were used as steady state performance indicators. The reasons for this are discussed. Vehicle driveability is also affected by manifold design and a novel test bed procedure has been used to generate relevant transient performance information. The test and data processing procedure are described and illustrated.
