The changes in marine diesel engine design to reduce operational costs, present the lubricant with the prospect of a more demanding environment in terms of control of wear and cleanliness. Unlike other areas for which lubricants are developed and subsequently approved by the machinery manufacturers, the are no standard industry tests available for laboratory assessment of performance of marine diesel engine lubricants. The formulators of such oils need therefore to develop their own tests to simulate field conditions. The Authors describe their work on arranging for continuous sampling of oil from the cylinder linear surface of their laboratory research engine whilst the same is running. They also review a radioactive technique for continuous assessment of top piston ring wear, known as Thin Layer Activation technique. Finally, the basic features of a Reciprocating Wear Rig are highlighted with emphasis on how the rig was designed to simulate wear conditions of piston rings and cylinder liners in actual engines.
