Diesel engines are used in marine areas such as Offshore oil and gas platforms for various prime mover applications. The engine must be a protected engine if it is located in an area that has been designated a hazardous area or if there is a probability that a flammable atmosphere may be present at any time whilst the engine is being used. The concept for the operation of protected diesel engines in marine areas is basically the same as that used for mining operations as detailed in BS6680: 1985. However there are some differences. Engines that operate in marine areas are subjected to different environmental conditions than those existing in mines and other similar areas. The differences and similarities between these two areas of application and the resulting approach to the method of protection the diesel engine is therefore the subject of this discussion from a classification society's point of view.
