Conventional internal coatings mainly consisting of epoxy resin and amine adduct or polyamide converter must be applied after the application of an external coating because the internal coatings will deteriorate when a pipe is preheated during the application of external coating. There are some difficulties in this procedure such that the external coating is also often damaged during the application of internal coating. The mercaptan adduct cured epoxy coating with a high thermal decomposition temperature of 266 Cel was found to have excellent resistance against preheating during external coating, and thus enables us to apply the external coating after the application of internal coating. This epoxy coating meets the requirements of API (American Petroleum Institute) standard RP 5L2 which specifies the internal coating of natural gas pipelines.
