Offshore pipelines play an important role in offshore oil production and transportation. The hostile environments and the currents on the ocean floor call for coatings of sufficient weight to provide stability and of specific composition to prevent corrosion. These characteristics are provided by two layers of coating, somastic and concrete. The somastic is composed of asphalt, sand, mineral fillers and fibers and the concrete contains minerals such as Barite, Hematite, and Magnetite. Presented here is a discussion of the thermal conductivity of somastic and concrete coatings that were experimentally determined in a previous investigation and how these values affect the heat transfer from the pipelines to be surrounding environment. Heat loss through the wall of offshore pipelines may be significant and may have a detrimental effect on the viscosity of the fluid and in turn on the pump performance. The overall heat transfer coefficient has been developed in order to perform the heat loss calculation.
