Taguchi philosophy of robust design is formulated in the context of optimization. In particular, the mean squared error of a design performance is derived explicitly in terms of the design parameters. This permits the strategic choice of the parameters that minimize the mean squared error of the performance early at the design phase. Thus, Taguci philosophy will achieve an even greater impact on quality improvement as its implementation is shifted from the usual domain of experimental development to the early phase of analytical design. A real life problem is used to illustrate the implementation of the formulation: design a door hanging process in car assembly that yields consistent door closing effort.
