The problem of component erosion due to solid particle impingement will continue to increase as system temperatures and speeds of the machinery increase. This is due partly to the all-weather operation conditions for helicopters and aircraft which must operate in dusty environments or must land on unprepared airstrips for both military and commercial operations. Different components need thin, but stable and good adhesion coatings to resist erosive forces and resulting damage encountered with a wide variety of operating conditions. This paper addresses the state-of-the-art of the erosion of coating systems subjected to solid particle impingement conditions. The advantages and disadvantages of coating systems - ceramic, oxide scale, metallic, and plastic - are presented. The selection of material for the coating system is outlined, the limitations are notified, and the improvements are suggested.
