Pump tests were performed on candidate formulations for a -54 to 135 Cel operating temperature range fire-resistant hydraulic fluid developed for the U.S. Air Force. The program rationale is summarized and the results of the various candidates are given. Besides ranking fluid formulations, the pump tests provided insight into the lubricating properties of viscosity-index and non-viscisity-index and non-viscosity-index improved formulations. Lubrication of the modern aerospace hydraulic pump used was dependent on the base stock viscosity, as opposed to measured kinematic viscosity of the fluid.
