The major improvements of fuel economy of the passenger car are likely to come from the engine. The use of a lean burn combustion system and the use of multiple valves are the main two methods for improving the petrol engine fuel economy. After a comparison between petrol and diesel engines it seems that the direct injection diesel engine with a Comprex supercharger is the most attractive from the fuel economy point of view.
