A major objective of the U.S. Air-Force's Flexible Assembly Subsystems (FAS) program is to overcome the lack of flexibility and adaptability in automated manufacturing systems. The three-year FAS program is now in the final systems integration phase, where individual subsystems are to be integrated into a fully functional flexible robotic assembly workcell. The FAS workcell includes two robots with a diversity of specialized end effectors, three vision systems, a programmable flexible assembly fixture, an automatic fastening machine, a hierarchical computer control system, and other supporting subsystems. The integrated cell will assemble and fasten a variety of airframe subassemblies of moderate size and complexity.
