Today's aerospace structural assembly environment is characterized by low flexibility and efficiency, and little use of automation. To address these problems in a small-batch-size manufacturing environment while increasing quality and surge capability, the Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratories have initiated an Intelligent Automated Assembly Thrust. A key element of this thrust is the computer-integrated factory, whose principal components are communications networks, computer-aided design, computer-aided assembly sequence planning, computer-integrated quality assurance, flexible assembly subsystems, intelligent production control and dynamic scheduling systems.
