This paper highlights the advances and trends in guidance technology for Automated Guided Vehicles. Particular attention is paid to off-wire guidance, and three generations in this technology are described. The use of navigational sensors and techniques, such as odometry, sonar, laser ranging, vision, lighthouse navigation, and inertial guidance, is discussed. Two basic design principles for important second generation systems are the use of simple sensors and the use of multiple sensors for reinforcement. The impact of off-wire guidance on other parts of the AGV system is mentioned, and the values of off-wire guidance in applications are enumerated.
