This paper is devoted to the preliminary design of ARIANE 5 solid rocket motors performed with the automated solid rocket motor design computer code PAPAO. PAPAO was first developed a few years ago in the field of military programs and has been recently extended and adapted to the case of ARIANE 5 solid rocket motors requirements and technologies. This extension work mainly related to the segmented case and propellant grain is described here, with emphasis on the assumptions adopted in the models in order to preserve an acceptable compromise between computational time and accuracy. These models make it possible to define motor configurations that meet the main features of the prescribed thrust-time curve and of course fulfill other motor requirements and constraints. Results of a typical parametric study are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the code, which in a major tool in the optimization process and also provides the designers with a start point for detailed design work.
