An infinite series solution is presented for the steady temperature distribution in a thin two-dimensional rectangular fin heated within two rectangular regions, and losing heat to an environment by linearized radiation or true convection. The solution approximates a spacecraft application where one or two heat dissipating electronic components are mounted to a thermal doubler (i.e. two-dimensional fin). The doubler helps to ensure the components operating integrity and reliability througout its design life by limiting its maximum temperature to a prescribed level. The solution is particularly useful in evaluating preliminary designs where geometry, heat loads, and environmental parameters change frequently. The formulation has been successfully implemented on a VAX 8600 computer using extended precision arithmetic.
