Low speed turbulent boundary layer flows over constant cross-section bodies possessing varying degrees and distributions of transverse curvature have been investigated experimentally. Four basic cross-sectional shapes having relevance to ship hulls, and aircraft fuselages were studied: rectangular, rectangular with rounded corners, superelliptic, and elliptic. The experiments were designed to be essentially constant pressure boundary layer studies with diffusion controlling the three-dimensional effects. Mean flow measurements showed that the effect of increasing transverse curvature is to increase the skin friction coefficient and decrease the integral thicknesses in the vicinity of large curvature if the local boundary layer thickness is on the order of or larger than the local radius of curvature of the body. Flow inclination measurements indicated that small but measurable cross-flows are generated over a body with transverse curvature.
