AlliedSignal Precision Products is developing a miniaturized low-cost Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with tactical performance which can be utilized in gun launched munitions, greater than 12000 g shock, and severe environmental conditions. The minimum configuration (MC) FOG implemented with a Silicon MEMS accelerometer provides the technology for achieving a very low cost IMU. In this paper, we will present the sensor selection, and IMU architecture and calibration approach of the IMU and illustrate the inherent advantages of this unique design. We will describe our modeling aid performance design approach and will present breadboard test results. Additionally, a calibration method based on parametric estimation technique was developed. The calibration method does not require repeated calibration procedures, thus significantly reducing IMU manufacturing cost and enabling high IMU production rates. Results will be reported on IMU performance verification, including bias, scale factor, misalignment and sensor non-orthogonality, under various environmental test conditions.
