Fiber Optic Sensor technology has reached a point where it is now a major factor in the design of the next generation of Inertial Measurement Units (IMU). Because of the Fiber Optic Sensors unique characteristics, the next generation of IMUs will offer lower cost, large dynamic range, precision, flexibility of design, and affordable fault tolerant system design. This article will cover the Unique system characteristics of Fiber Optic Gyros, Design considerations that govern the introduction of Fiber Optic Gyros in mobile platforms, Application of Fiber Optic Gyros to two unique mobile platform applications.
