Head-mounted displays (HMD)-small computer screens attached together with an optical system in front of the user's eyes-are increasingly employed as a means of creating a "virtual reality" in a wide range of professional applications. In training situations, HMD systems are used for computer simulation and for presenting database models of real-world phenomena to create what is called a synthetic environment. The authors describe Ericsson Saab Avionics high-performance head-mounted display, which is intended for industrial and military applications. Ongoing development of future head-mounted displays for military aircraft is also described.
