For pt.I see ibid., p.74, April 1998). 'Kelly' Johnson had already achieved more than most men in a working lifetime when he took on his most challenging project. It was to succeed brilliantly but after that his fortunes began to turn and it was time to pass the baton to a new generation. This article discusses his involvement with the development of hypersonic aircraft from the 1950s to the 1980s including the SR-71 Blackbird and the F117 Stealth Fighter. His character and management style are discussed.
