It was to succeed brilliantly but after that his fortunes began to turn and it was time to pass the baton to a new generation. This article discusses his involvement with the development of hypersonic aircraft from the 1950s to the 1980s including the SR-71 Blackbird and the F117 Stealth Fighter. His character and management style are discussed.
