The ROMANSE (Road Management System for Europe) project is based on the City of Southampton and the surrounding area of the County of Hampshire in the UK. This paper describes the ROMANSE system and the integration of some of its applications. The system provides the services required to meet the needs of travellers and transportation planners in the area that it serves. It has been in operation since 1992 and has achieved a fully integrated Traffic and Travel Information Centre (TTIC). This provides real time traffic and travel information through several media, traffic management, public transport operation monitoring and support for trip planning. The ROMANSE Project forms part of the EUROSCOPE project, operates within the TTIC, and consists of a number of applications fulfilling various functions.
