Understanding the vehicle driving environment based on road condition, visibility, weather, etc., is necessary to ensure safe and smooth transport facilities. The road condition is one of the most important factors for understanding vehicle driving environments. A new algorithm for discrimination of the road condition has been described. This algorithm employs multivariate analysis to discriminate the road condition based on temperature as well as features of the road extracted from an image. The authors conducted field tests to verify the accuracy of this algorithm and obtained favorable results.
