A concept of a modular multisensor system for use on an airborne platform is presented. The sensor system comprises two high resolution IR sensors working in the mid and far IR spectral regions, a RGB video camera with its sensitivity extended to the near IR in connection with a laser illuminator, and a radar with a spatial resolution adapted to the expected mine sizes. The sensor concept emerged from the evaluation of comprehensive static and airborne measurements on numerous buried and unburied mines. The measurements were performed on single mines and on minefields, layed down according to military requirements. The system has an on-board realtime image processing capability and is intended to operate autonomously with a data link to a mobile groundstation. Data from a navigation unit serve to transform the location of identified mines into a geodetic coordinate system. The system will be integrated into a cylindrical structure of about 40 cm diameter. This may be a drone or simply a tube which can be mounted on any carrier whatever.
