This paper outlines the software concepts on which a demonstrable Modular Avionics Operating System (MAOS), developed within British Aerospace, Military Aircraft and Aerostructures, is based. Modular avionics techniques aim to reduce life-cycle costs and improve technical and operational interoperability between aircraft and aircraft weapon subsystems. The intention is to achieve this by standardisation of hardware and software building blocks. The principal aim of the software concept is to reduce costs by allowing portability, and re-use of the application software. The MAOS permits this by providing two standard interfaces-the Application to Operating System interface (APOS) and the hardware Module to Operating System interface (MOS) to provide application portability and hardware independence respectively. The MAOS provides facilities to support the operation of hard real-time avionics systems and fault management to overcome hardware faults and achieve the dependability goals. The main software concepts are described together with future work to be performed.
