The Japanese Communications Research Laboratory has joined several other organizations in cooperative research into the Energy Transmission to a High altitude long endurance airship ExpeRiment (ETHER). The authors have developed a thin and light rectenna to be mounted on the HALROP airship used for ETHER. To make a simple and economical high power transmission system, they used a dual-polarization technique to double the microwave power flux density. Thus, the rectenna was designed to receive the dual polarization components simultaneously and independently. It was made of a circular microstrip patch with two-point feeds, each connected to a rectifying circuit. Its weight-power ratio was 3.8 g/W and the total weight of a 1200-element array was 22.8 kg. The maximum RF-to-DC conversion efficiency was 81% for the 20-element panel measurements. An ETHER trial was carried out on October 16th, 1995 using the rectenna array mounted on the HALROP airship, and the microwave powered flight test was successful. The extracted DC power was estimated to 3 kW and the continuous flight time was as long as three minutes.
