Complexity of transport aircraft digital systems has been increased with each new project. Flight control law development, for example, is no longer an isolated task but has to take inputs from structural engineers and to consider flexible mode influences, whilst the structural engineers have to consider flight control laws and system failure cases for their analysis. This means that system specifications and subsequent design documentation has to be more formal detailed and transparent to be used in a wider community of aircraft system designers. Based on the experience of control law development 'by hand' and taking into account the available procedures and engineering environment, flight guidance and control designers have developed the High Order Structuring Tool for Embedded System Software (HOSTESS).
