The block diagram of a microcomputer-based instrument for inspection of insulation coatings in buried pipelines is described. Mathematical expressions for the design of its component parts are derived. The proposed instrument measures the relative current difference in the pipeline at a given distance along its axis and is not affected by current instability, i.e., does demand special stabilization of the cathodic protection current or of the probing current when cathodic protection is not available.
