An H infinity design procedure is illustrated in an industrial application : the problem of controlling the attitude of a satellite with a large solar array is solved. The primary objective of the design is to ensure the robust stabilization of the platform in order to maintain a good pointing. The H infinity design procedure presented incorporates two stages that allow one to deal with the well-known trade-off between performances and robust stability. A loop-shaping method guarantees the specifications of performance and then an H infinity optimization based on the normalized coprime factors approach robustly stabilizes the shaped plant.
