The frequency band of millimeter waves is considered to be useful for applications to traffic control systems because it has been unused, small equipment can be designed and a high-resolution device can be developed. Furthermore, millimeter waves have characteristics that are superior to optical waves in bad weather applications. In order to obtain the necessary data to develop an automobile radar, three kinds of test systems have been used for various radar system experiments using millimeter waves. Items to be tested are radio wave propagation characteristics, scattering cross-section wave interference characteristics, reflection factor, and so forth. The authors also describe the GPS navigation system, and a system for communication between automobiles and a railroad crossing sensor using millimeter waves.
