Traffic accidents can be substantially reduced by the use of traffic engineering and management measures including: improved junction provision and design, changes in routes, and better pedestrian facilities. It is clear that traffic engineering provides substantial scope to reduce accidents if the effect of such measures on accident risk has been reliably assessed. The author looks at the development of computer modelling software for provision to traffic authorities to help reduce accidents by means of traffic engineering techniques.
