The INMARSAT system serves the needs of all four basic types of aeronautical communications: air traffic services (ATS), aeronautical operational communications (AOC), airline administrative correspondence (AAC) and aeronautical public correspondence (APC). The author describes the three basic components of the aeronautical satellite system-the satellites, the ground earth stations, and the aircraft avionics. Developments in technology for voice services are discussed.
