An apparatus is described for the study of materials properties-integrated absorption coefficient, losses of mass, and gas liberation-under the influence of low-temperature plasma and electromagnetic radiation with a nearly solar spectral composition. An ion source simulates the ion composition and energy of ionospheric plasma and produces a flux of up to 1013 ions/(cm2 sec). The measurement system includes the following: a radio-frequency monopole mass spectrometer to monitor the residual gases and those released by radiation; a quartz balance to determine the weight losses of the specimens; and a photometer to monitor the integrated solar-radiation absorption coefficient of the specimens in the initial state and after exposure to a given radiation dose.
