A sound reproduction system having three speakers will produce optimum overall results from two channel sources. It can be shown that, compared to two speaker stereo, a three speaker system can produce a soundfield that is wider and with the extra dimension of height, the effect being likened to a sound picture. This increase in potential sound directions enables much more acoustic detail to be revealed from any stereo source, resulting in improved realism.
