The author describes the architecture and functional operation of a multi-tasking, micro-coded timer unit specifically designed to synthesise and capture the high resolution, real-time signals required to meet the developing needs of the automotive industry particularly with respect to the increasing demands for exhaust pollution reduction combined with improved performance and drivability of the automobile.
