The fundamental purpose of expressways is to maintain favorable traffic for users and ensure safety for drivers. To accomplish this there are a variety of facilities, such as road signs, lighting, tunnel ventilation, power distribution equipment and highway administration systems. As these facilities are scattered throughout Japan they must be supervised and controlled in a regionally integrated mode. The authors outline general telecommunication facilities in use on expressways.
