The chemistry of fuel cells is explained with a review of the development of spacecraft power plants up to the Space Shuttle system. The author describes his own construction of an experimental H2/O2 fuel cell, with measurements of the voltages obtained from room-temperature reactions, and a warning against attempts by unqualified operators to repeat such experiments.
