Easy to produce and nonpolluting, hydrogen could be the ideal fuel for the future. As a gas, it could be piped to homes for heating and cooking, or converted into electricity by fuel cells. As a cryogenic liquid, hydrogen could launch sockets or fly aircraft. Or locked as a solid in metal halide canisters, it could propel cars and lorries. However, for global use, hydrogen still has a major drawback as an alternative fuel, the lack of sufficient fuel storage for vehicle propulsion.
