There has been significant progress in Europe toward the widespread implementation of road transport informatics (RTI), or intelligent vehicle highway systems (IVHS). A brief summary is offered of the more significant developments. These include route guidance system implementations in Berlin and London along with the major research programs DRIVE and PROMETHEUS. The goal of the DRIVE program, an EEC project, is to coordinate the many developments into a coherent integrated road transport environment (IRTE) in which a common infrastructure and standardized techniques, particularly for communication, are used in a number of application areas. The PROMETHEUS project is aimed at providing a common European traffic system that will increase traffic safety and maximize efficiency.
