A brief summary is given of the more significant developments leading toward the widespread implementation of road transport informatics (RTI), or intelligent vehicle highway systems (IVHS) as they are known in the US. The discussion covers route guidance system implementations in Berlin and London, and it includes descriptions of the major research programs, DRIVE and PROMETHEUS. The numerous current, or proposed, field trials and full implementations of RTI are summarized. Some of the issues surrounding the implementations of RTI systems in Europe are examined.
