Summary form only given. Direct measurements of the electric fields in the Earths magnetosphere are technically difficult because they have to be made in an environment of a thin, hot plasma, which is easily disturbed by the measuring device. The double probe method is one of a small number of techniques that allow such measurements. The method has been developed to a high degree of sophistication and has been successfully used in nearly all the major regions of the magnetosphere.
