One of the techniques that have developed from state space formulations of systems is that of eigenstructure assignment. The technique is concerned with the placing of eigenvalues and their associated eigenvectors, by feedback, to meet closed loop design specifications. For a given spectrum of closed loop eigenvalues, the choice of eigenvectors is governed by the number of inputs and outputs. This can be seen by determining the eigenvectors for any eigenvalue. The paper looks at approaches to eigenstructure assignment, their MATLAB realisation, and their application to a simple aerospace example.
