The aim of the design is to develop a model reference adaptive control (MRAC) scheme for boundary control of an unstable aircraft, with a view to eliminate, if possible, the need for air data sensors. A modified form of a time response parameter (TRP) is suggested and used as a handling quality criterion, which in turn, forms the basis for selecting the reference model in an MRAC design. Problems associated with boundary control, which involve control of multiple response variables, are discussed. Adaptation laws and reference model(s) based on the modified TRP criterion are developed systematically. Performance evaluation of the suggested scheme(s) is carried out via simulation for pilot commands as well as for gust excitations.
