The author reviews the technology, applications, and voltage requirements for three of the most common power switch-load topologies, namely the low-side switch (LSS), the high-side switch (HSS), and the push-pull (P/P) output. In particular, he examines emerging trends in the use of self-isolated, conventional and RESURF junction-isolated, and dielectrically isolated process technologies needed to address applications employing LSS topologies for single-quadrant power converters, LV P/P topologies for disk drives, monolithic HV P/P topologies for display drivers, multichip HV P/P topologies common to offline motor control and HSS topologies used in automotive electronics.
