Since railways first carried passengers there has been the need for passenger information. The need has been served in one way or another using sometimes the most advanced technology of the day and sometimes the most basic methods. However, it is clear that InterCity customers require information presented to them on the train in a manner consistent with the best that modern technology can offer. The author describes how a key measure of success for any transport industry can be described by asking the following question: As a result of a particular travelling experience is the customer more or less likely than before to repeat the experience? He argues that good passenger information well presented, in keeping with or better than air their competitors, clearly has a major part to play in the future success of InterCity.
