A life-cycle cost (LCC) model developed for dormant systems, the dormant system life-cycle cost model, is discussed. A dormant system is a passive type system with few, if any, moving parts. The primary cost elements are driven by shelf-life, periodic inspections/deployments, and prolonged storage. The dormant system life-cycle cost model is programmed on a Lotus electronic spreadsheet program. The model provides an input table consisting of the hardware-peculiar variables, government furnished variables, and preset report. The model primarily estimates operating and support (O&S) costs, although production costs are calculated based on unit price and number of units, whereas, the development cost is a throughput amount. The model was developed specifically for small programs such as life support equipment and chemical defense devices.
