An architectural approach to implementing modular avionics design concepts when existing avionics systems are being upgraded is established. Modular avionics architectures are identified, and a process for implementing these architectures during systems requirements analysis and design is proposed. A framework is established for upgrading existing avionics systems based on systems, software, and hardware architecture concepts. This framework is known as the modular avionics process, and it consists of fifteen steps described in four stages. This process enables the allocation of system requirements to subsystems, software functions, and hardware functions. It also includes an assessment of whether a modular avionics design approach is feasible.
