A fault-tolerant operating system (OS) kernel for a wavefront array processor geared to signal processing in a distributed avionics environment is described. Attention is given to the structure of a signal processing subsystem composed of multiple wavefront array processor modules and an associated general-purpose processor. Kernel capabilities for array management, Ada application support, and process scheduling are outlined. Kernel array manager functions that control the array according to Ada application directives are detailed. Fault management functions for handling transient interconnection network and processor node faults are described. A strategy for handling hard array processor faults is reviewed, including procedures for dynamic array module reconfiguration, executing alternative application versions on the array, and directing application migration to other subsystems.
